On Saturday, June 6, 2026, at approximately 2:40am, the Westport Police Department received a complaint of a stolen motor vehicle from the Westport Saugatuck Railroad Station. The victim explained that he had parked the Jeep at approximately 6:15pm on Friday, June 5, 2026, and returned to the lot to find it missing. He further reported that after locking the vehicle he had hidden the ignition key within the exterior mounted spare tire. On the afternoon of Thursday, June 11, 2026, Bridgeport Police recovered the vehicle on Fairfield Avenue within their city. It was unoccupied at the time of recovery. Further investigation including a review of surveillance footage captured at the railroad station revealed that a male suspect appeared to have watched the victim hide the key. He then waited for him to leave the immediate area before approaching the vehicle, retrieving the key and using it to drive away in the car. It is alleged that this suspect was Robert Zito. An arrest warrant was sought and granted for him in connection with this incident. On Monday, September 21, 2026, the Westport Police Department was contacted by the Darien Police Department who reported that Zito was being held in connection with the active warrant for his arrest maintained by our agency. Zito was transported back to Westport where he was formally charged with Larceny of a Motor Vehicle (1st Offense). Bond was set by the court at $100,000.00. Zito was unable to post this bond. He was transported to Stamford Superior Court for arraignment on the morning of Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
