Discount clothing retailer Syms Corp famous for saying educated consumers were its best customers, filed for bankruptcy Wednesday along with its Filene’s Basement chain and both plan to go out of business.    There are 25 Syms and 21 Filene’s Basement stores, mostly in the eastern United States, and the two combined employ about 2,500, according to court documents.    The company said it expects both chains to complete going-out-of-business sales by the end of January.  Read the full story…..

BRIDGEPORT, CT (November 2, 2011) – City public works crews will travel to the town of Bethel today to assist workers in that town in clearing downed trees and debris from their roads in the wake of this past weekend’s autumn nor’easter.

“While the City of Bridgeport was spared the brunt of this weekend’s nor’easter, some of our neighboring towns, like Bethel, were not so fortunate. We’re happy to lend a hand and provide their town with resources to aid in their clean-up. In the days following the tornado last year, and more recently, after Hurricane Irene, our neighbors were kind enough to help us, so we’re happy to return the favor,” said Mayor Bill Finch.

Public Facilities Director Charles Carroll said the City is sending one payloader, two dump trucks, a 40-yard Dumpster and a two-person chainsaw crew, for a total of six crew members.  Carroll said he expects the crew to stay in Bethel through the end of the week.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by animal rights activists that claims the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus abuses its elephants.

Feld attorney John Simpson said the appellate ruling supports the company’s $20 million racketeering lawsuit against Ryder, animal rights groups and their attorneys that claims they committed bribery, obstruction of justice and other illegal acts in filing the elephant suit. Simpson said the purpose of the company’s suit is to keep animal rights groups from using the federal court system to pursue “radical agendas.”  Read full article…..

NORWALK – Cox Radio has sold its two long-running stations to WSHU Public Radio Group, and ends an era of local news in Norwalk and Stamford. John Labarca, host of Italian House Party, which has been broadcast by Cox Radio since June 2008, will air his final live segment starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday.  Read full article here…

A plane carrying Rick Hendirick, the owner of one of NASCAR’s top racing teams crashed landed in Florida. The pilot reported the plane had no brakes upon landing. In 2004 Hendrick was involved in another plane crash that killed many of his family members.

24 members of the 34th police academy training class in Bridgeport graduated at the city’s Common Council chambers Friday night. Chief Gaudette told the graduating class “I am asking you to always treat people like a member of your family because all these people are part of the community you serve.” They were led by the Police Department’s Honor Guard and retired police detective Peter Stevens playing the U.S. Marine Hymn on the bagpipe.
Those graduating the academy were: Phillip Norris Jr., Michael R. Carter, Eliud Henry II, David W. Rivera, John Carrano Jr, Jonathan Duharte, Eric R. Schneider, Timothy Leonard, Jamie Jarrett, Daniel Paz, Fabio W. Pereira, Michael Stanitis, Christopher Zaleta, Marie Cetti, Ean Smith, Clinton Jarvis Jr., Thomas Harper, Ashley Taylor, Marco Brito, Jeffrey Franco, Albert Palatiello III, Sheldon Mayne, Adam Rozum, Paul Cari and Ballard.

The weekend’s storm could not trick Fairfield’s Safety Street today. The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and some scary politicians join together to provide a safe fun community event handing out candy, balloons, hot chocolate and other treat to the local ghouls and goblins.

Shortly after 5pm police were called to American Customs at 264 Fairchild Avenue.  Two employees were handling a gun when it discharged, the bullet went through a door, through a wall and struck the victim in the chest.  He is being operated on at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport for non-life threatening injuries.

Approximately 1:30 on Thursday an officer on patrol, came upon a vehicle stopped
in the middle of the road on Vine St. near Coleman St. The operator of the vehicle
advised the officer that he found the victim lying in the street. Upon checking
on the victim the officer found that the victim had been shot and called for
assistance and medics.

The victim remained conscious and advised the officers that he had been shot
down the street referring to Park Ave. The victim has been known to frequent the
area. Medics arrived and transported the victim to St. Vincent’s Medical Center
where the victim later expired in the OR at 0630.
