Bridgeport Summer Reading Kicks Off

#Bridgeport, CT- The Bridgeport Public Library is uniting with libraries nationwide in Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) ‘Build a Better World.’ Join the Bridgeport Public Library on June 24, 2017 at 2:00P.M.tokickoff off ‘Build a Better World’ summer reading program at The Burroughs and Saden Memorial Library, 925 Broad Street, Bridgeport, CT.  Entertainment will be provided by musician duo Down Home Frolic: Dan Gardella, fiddler extraordinaire and Fran Block, banjo, accordion and percussionist.

 

“This is a great summer program for our children. We hope that parents are able to take advantage of the various activities and resources the city has to offer.   The library and this reading program provide kids with free, safe, and educational summer fun,” said Mayor Ganim.

 

Sign up online at Bportlibrary.org and keep track of all the wonderful books you read this summer. For every book read, one dollar will be donated by our Friends of the Bridgeport Public Library to buy new children’s books.  Early readers, children, teens and adults are all invited to participate. The more you read the bigger the build of children’s collections!

 

Bridgeport library locations will also be offering an array of programs for all ages to help better your world and the world of those in the community all summer long. Magicians, crafts, yoga, movies and more! During each month, the library also invites patrons to participate in their ‘Build a Better World’ donation drive.  Pet supplies, school supplies and diapers will be the focus of donations over the summer months.

 

All events are free and open to the public. Reading sign-ups will go live on the library website after the kickoff.  Patrons are encouraged to visit the website for more information on all these events and to sign up for the summer reading program. Stratford News: Body Recovered From River

UPDATE from Police: The man recovered this evening from the Housatonic River has been positively identified as Tavares Harris.  Harris went missing on June 6th after he crashed his car into the Devon Bridge shortly after midnight and then jumped from the bridge prompting a search and recovery effort that lasted several days and involving numerous surrounding agencies.

 

4:14pm–Stratford CT– A kayaker called police to say he found a body floating in the Housatonic River.  Police and fire marine units recovered the man near the Devon Bridge.  The medical examiner was also called to the scene.  The man has not been identified at this time.

 

Around midnight on June 7 police, fire and Coast Guard were called to look for a man that crashed his car on the Devon (Washington) Bridge.  The bridge tender said he saw the man jump in to the river.  An exhaustive search that night and the next day turned up nothing.  Again, the man recovered today has not been identified.

 

Shelton News: Retired K-9 Passes Away

#Shelton CT–On Tuesday, June 13 th , Shelton Police retired K-9 Jager passed away. K-9 Jager came to the department in 2008 partially through a donation from People’s United Bank. K-9 Jager was paired with his partner Detective Christopher Nugent. K-9 Jager was an asset to the department and assisted several local, state, and federal agencies during his career.

K-9 Jager was an effective tool for law enforcement during major investigations in Shelton and other jurisdictions. K-9 Jager and his handler proved to be an effective team by combining Nugent’s law enforcement awareness and K-9 Jager’s willingness to work. K9 Jager assisted in approximately 75 successful tracks and apprehended as many as 15 dangerous suspects.

Detective Nugent and K-9 Jager were also active in the community. The pair was known to visit area schools and attend community functions and programs. K-9 Jager retired in 2014 and continued to live with Detective Nugent.

 

Bridgeport Department of Health and Social Services Seeks Input From Residents

#Bridgeport, CT- As part of its preparation for accreditation as a local public health department, the Bridgeport Department of Health and Social Services is seeking input from residents of Bridgeport for its strategic plan.  Listening sessions with the public are being held throughout the City during the month of June.  Each session will provide a brief overview of the findings from the Community Needs Assessment followed by a discussion of community health priorities. Suggestions for the Health Department initiatives are welcome, as well as recommendations for addressing critical health concerns.

 

Each session will begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 7:30 p.m.
