Bridgeport News: City Hall Tax Protest

#Bridgeport Connecticut-- Protesters from across the city descended on the city council meeting Tuesday in opposition of the recent 29 percent mill rate increase in taxes.  Many reporters and officials I spoke to said they have never seen such a large gathering at a city council meeting.  The audience was upset that only six people were allowed to speak, Ernie Newton used his time not to talk about taxes but to rehash his plea on a bid he placed and was denied because he did not "check the box" that he was a convicted felon.   The audience was loud but quieted down for respect for the opening prayer and recited the pledge of allegiance.  There were calls for the…

Ganim On Municipal Layoffs

The following is a statement by Mary Joe Ganim regarding intending municipal employee layoffs in the city of Bridgeport. "As we end fiscal year 2016 and begin a new fiscal year, my administration has been unable to come to an accommodation with the various city employee labor unions that would get us to a figure of $4,000,000 in savings that is required in order to balance the budget for the coming fiscal year.  Our administration has been working very hard for months in cooperation with labor unions trying to close the budget gap through some modest concessions such as wage freezes and furlough days.
