Bridgeport News: Child Hit By Car

3:14pm–#Bridgeport CT–A 3 year old boy on Poplar Street ran out to chase a ball and was hit by a car which stopped and cooperated with police.  When I go to calls like this it is easy to get apprehensive on what the result was.  I’m happy to report the child was alert, not seriously injured and EMS from American Medical Response were showing great compassion as they always do.

As I was leaving the scene firefighters were dispersing to check on residents in the neighborhood to make sure they have a working smoke detector since they were in the neighborhood and no longer needed for the call.  If you live in Bridgeport and  need a smoke detector firefighters will install one at no charge and no questions asked.  Call 203-335-8835.

This is a partnership with Regional Youth Adult Social Action Partnership and over 50,000 smoke detectors have been installed in over 12,000 homes.  143 document fires  Since the program began, there have been 143 documented instances of fires in homes with smoke alarms installed for free by the Bridgeport Fire Department. In each of those incidents, residents of those homes were alerted by their smoke alarm and able to escape safely without injury.

Bridgeport’s First Starbucks Begins Hiring

“After decades of broken promises, it’s finally happening. Steelpointe Harbor will serve as a major boon for the city’s economy. Top-notch businesses are coming to Steelpointe Harbor. These companies will create good paying jobs, and will help attract even more businesses to the state’s largest city. Bridgeport is getting better every day. And, job creators from across the country like Starbucks are taking note.” –Mayor Bill Finch

Bridgeport, Conn. (July 3, 2015) – Bridgeport’s first Starbucks, expected to arrive this fall, is looking for employees. Mayor Bill Finch and Steelpointe Harbor developers Bridgeport Landing Development, LLC, a subsidiary of The RCI Group, announced that the store is set to open this fall.

“After decades of broken promises, it’s finally happening. Steelpointe Harbor will serve as a major boon for the city’s economy,” said Mayor Finch. “Top-notch businesses are coming to Steelpointe Harbor. These companies will create good paying jobs, and will help attract even more businesses to the state’s largest city. Bridgeport is getting better every day. The company’s decision for its new location says great things about Bridgeport’s success as an up and coming city, and could mean even more for its future. According to a study done by Zillow, Starbucks uses a strict strategy to determine the locations that will offer the most to their business, proving that Bridgeport has a lot to offer.

The incoming store will also help Bridgeport on its path to success, as Starbucks locations have been shown to lead to development and increased property value.  “Between 1997 and 2014, homes within a quarter-mile of a Starbucks increased in value by 96 percent, on average, compared with 65 percent for all U.S. homes,” according to the Zillow study.

Starbucks’ search for new employees can also serve as a great job opportunity for residents. In addition to the benefits and coffee discounts, Starbucks offers a welcoming and enjoyable work environment for their employees—part of this is their history of creating a diverse workforce.

Their website explains why, “At Starbucks, we strive to create a culture that values and respects diversity and inclusion. Our welcoming work environment encourages partners to engage and make Starbucks a place they look forward to working each day.”

Starbucks is also joined by Bass Pro Shops, T-Mobile, Chipotle and Cineopolis, a luxury movie theater complex, are among the first tenants announced  at Bridgeport’s Steelpointe Harbor Development Project.  Once complete, Steelpointe Harbor will be a 2 million-square-foot superregional waterfront destination.  Spanning 82 acres, it will feature more than 750,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and entertainment, a 12-screen premium theater, two hotels, 1,100 mid-and-high rise residential units, 30,000 square feet of office and a 200-slip, full service, deep water marina.

Bridgeport Announces New Safety Initiatives

#Bridgeport CT (June 30, 2015 Press Release) – Mayor Bill Finch today announced the Police Department is instituting walking beats in the city’s four public housing complexes and expanding its Safe Corridors program in the area of Trumbull Gardens to enhance safety for kids and families.

“Bridgeport today is safer than it has been in about 40 years, but we can and must do more,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “That’s why we are initiating walking beats in our public housing complexes. Our officers will be out there every day — talking with residents, building better relationships and keeping our kids safe. It’s not just community policing. This is smart policing.”
In addition, the city is expanding its Safe Corridors program to add approximately 10 cameras around schools near Trumbull Gardens.

Safe Corridors is designed to ensure kids get to and from school safely through additional patrols by school resource officers and community volunteers at the beginning and end of the school day and through technology.

“This is a layered approach to safety through police, volunteers and cameras. The cameras are monitored throughout the school day in our command center, and they record 24-hours a day,” said Jorge Garcia, the city’s Director of Public Facilities. “In the event of an incident, police have immediate access to the footage.”

Security cameras have been invaluable in investigations, said Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr.

“We’ve identified suspects and solved crimes using video from businesses, private homes, schools and police department cameras,” said Chief Gaudett. “The cameras not only help our detectives solve crimes but they serve as a deterrent to crime as well. The new cameras around Trumbull Gardens will make the community safer.”

The department continues to expand its capacity to use technology in investigations. Last year, the department sent detectives for specialized FBI training in the Digital Imaging Video Recovery (DIVRT) system, which allows detectives to efficiently retrieve video from public and private security systems so it can be quickly disseminated to the public.

That initiative has solved a number of serious crimes, including the April 11 killing of Jose Salgado in his store.
