Bridgeport Police Make Arrest in December Fatal Hit-and-Run

#Bridgeport, Conn. (Jan. 14, 2015) – A 46-year-old city woman was arrested today in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred on Dec. 4, 2014.

Detectives arrested Patricia Daniels, 46, of Palisade Avenue in Bridgeport, on charges of second-degree manslaughter, risk of injury to a minor and evading responsibility. Her bond was set at $150,000.

The incident happened at about 6:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of Boston Avenue. The victim, Evelyn Agyei, 51, was driving with her 11-year-old son in the back seat of a Subaru Outback when she lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. Agyei died from her injuries.

Her son told Officer Jose Luna that a white BMW sport utility vehicle began to “ram” their car from behind, striking it several times. The impact caused the Subaru to lose control, cross the center divider and strike a tree.

Detective Art Calvao secured video footage from the area. Based on information from the video and witnesses, detectives requested assistance from the Department of Motor Vehicles and received a list of all BMW X-3 vehicles registered in Greater Bridgeport.

“Detectives fanned out throughout the area, checking vehicle by vehicle looking for damage that would be consistent with what occurred in this incident,” said Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr.  “We were committed to bringing justice to Evelyn and her family. I’m grateful that we have been able to do that.”

Based on the DMV list, Detectives Paul Ortiz and Ada Curet checked an address on Palisade Avenue on Dec. 16. Finding no one home, they left a business card.

Daniels contacted police later that day and Detectives Ortiz and Curet spoke with her and, with her consent, examined her BMW X-3. It had consistent damage.

When the detectives asked about the damage, Daniels stated that she had been traveling on Boston Avenue at about 6 a.m. the day of the incident. She said traveled to Saint Vincent’s Medical Center   where she checked herself in for a psychiatric evaluation.

Subsequently, the rear bumper of the Subaru and front bumper of the BMW were sent to the state police crime lab and results showed that paint particles on the BMW bumper matched the Subaru bumper.

Investigators worked closely with the state Department of Motor Vehicles, the State Police Crime Lab, the State Police Traffic Control Division and Trumbull Police in the investigation.
