Report of a car that struck the Wendy’s on Main Street in Stratford.

Stratford, CT – September 6, 2025 – The Sterling Community Center is proud to present its annual Down & Dirty 5K Obstacle Race at Stratford’s scenic Short Beach. This family-friendly event has become a beloved community tradition, drawing hundreds of participants from across the region to tackle an obstacle-filled course while raising critical funds to support Sterling’s youth programs and services.

Participants ages 8 and up will face 18 obstacles including mud pits, sand, climbing walls, and water challenges, with waves launching every 10 minutes from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Proceeds from the event benefit Sterling’s Youth Athletics, Financial Aid initiatives, and Resource Connection Food Pantry, including senior food delivery and the Food-4-Kids program.

“Each year, the Down & Dirty 5K brings our community together in an incredible display of teamwork, fun, and generosity,” said Annya White-Brown of Sterling Community Center. “This race is about more than getting muddy—it’s about ensuring every child has access to opportunities, while also supporting families in need through our community programs.”

Report of a fire in an industrial facility on Garfield Ave in Stratford. Firefighters are on scene and confirmed a fire inside the facility and are in the process of putting it out at this time. Firefighters are on scene reporting it was a fire in a rubbish pile.

A rollover accident reported near exit 54 southbound left lane on the Sikorsky Bridge. No word on injuries.

Stratford, CT –August 20, 2025– Sterling Community Center is thrilled to announce the return of
its 12th annual Down & Dirty 5K Obstacle Run, happening September 6, 2025 at Short
Beach in Stratford.
This unique, family-friendly fundraiser invites participants ages 8 and up of all fitness levels to
run, walk, skip, or dance their way through an unforgettable 5K getting dirty and sandy, all in
support of Sterling Community Center programs and services.
The event kicks off with the first wave at 8:30 AM, continuing through midday.
With over 18 obstacles, like Muddy Puddles, the Wall, Super Swing, and Soccer Darts, the
Sterling Down & Dirty 5K is more than just a race, it’s a celebration of community and giving
back. Whether you’re in it to challenge yourself or just have fun with friends, every participant
helps raise funds for Sterling Community Center’s programs and services including Youth
Athletics, Financial Aid, and our Resource Connection Food Pantry.
Participants can register as individuals or rally friends, family, or colleagues to form a team and
bring the energy on race day to raise funds for SCC.
Team Categories Includes:
● General Teams: Family, friends, clubs, and community members
● Sterling Spirit Teams: Represent your corner of SCC: athletics, day camp, after-school,
volunteers and supporters
● School Teams: Students, staff, and families can represent their schools

Report of a fire on the second floor of a house on the 100 block of Adams Street in Stratford. Firefighters arrived on scene to report that the home owner put out the majority of the fire with a garden hose.

As students prepare to return to school this fall, the Stratford Health Department is once again offering Back-to-School Physicals & Immunizations Clinics to ensure children are up to date with their required health screenings and vaccinations.

The clinics will run on select dates in August and early September at the Stratford Health Department, located at 468 Birdseye Street, 3rd Floor, Stratford, CT 06615. Services are available by appointment only for students under the age of 19. Available immunizations include Tdap, Hepatitis A and B, Varicella (chickenpox), MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Polio, and Meningococcal.

Appointments are available during the following times:

• Tuesdays: August 12, 19, 26 & September 2 (2:00 PM – 6:30 PM)
• Thursdays: August 14, 21, 28 (8:30 AM – 4:30 PM)
• Wednesdays: August 27 & September 3 (8:30 AM – 4:30 PM)

“We want to make it easy and accessible for families to get their children ready for a healthy school year,” said Kris Agapito, RN, Public Health Supervisor. “These clinics help remove barriers for working parents and ensure that students are compliant with school entry requirements. If not up-to-date on vaccines, students may not be allowed start on the first day of school.”

The clinics accept Husky insurance and offer a sliding fee scale for families with private insurance or no insurance. Administrative fees apply, with physicals costing $80 and immunizations ranging from $5 to $20 per dose. A TB skin test is also available for $20 and requires two appointments.

Kim Feroleto, RN, Public Health Nurse, emphasized, “Keeping our children vaccinated and up to date on physicals is a critical step in protecting their health and the health of the entire school community. We’re here to support Stratford families with compassionate and affordable care.”

Families are encouraged to call the Stratford Health Department at 203-385-4090 to schedule an appointment as soon as possible, as slots fill up quickly.

Yes, we are bowling in the library again with a new twist.  After hours, black lights, music, & dress to ‘glow’. Great snacks & of course, top bowler prizes.  No latecomers admitted; registration required as well as a parental permission slip, which must be handed in to stay & play. NOTE: This event ends after hours. Make arrangements ahead of time to be picked up–on time–in the back parking lot. Grades 7-13. Registration required. Location: Lovell Room.

8/14: 2:00-4:30 pm: Giant Jenga

Enjoy a fun afternoon playing giant board games and making friends. Ages 10-14. Registration required. Location: Lovell Room.

8/19: 3:30-4:30 pm: Tie-Dye Mania

OH NO! Summer is coming to an end so let’s have a Tie Dye Mania. You will get to choose from either a t-shirt, hair tie, or handkerchief.  Grades 7-13. Registration Required. Location: Library Courtyard. *In case of inclement weather program will take place in the Lovell Room.
