Washington, DC— Today, Representative Jim Himes (CT-04), along with Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) and Anthony Gonzalez (OH-16), introduced the Safe to Tell Act.  The bill creates a grant program for states to develop systems, such as telephone hotlines, mobile applications, or websites that allow people to anonymously report potential threats to schools.

“Too often, in the wake of a school shooting, we look back at the behavior of the killer and see that there were warning signs that went unreported,” said Himes.  “People notice things that don’t seem quite right, or that put them on edge, but don’t know how or where to report it.  The Safe to Tell Act creates ways for people to share their concerns of potential threats and educates the public and law enforcement on how to report.  Earlier warning and better reporting will save lives.”

“The Safe to Tell Act will create a safe, uninformed, and simple method for individuals to report probable threats to schools,” said Diaz-Balart. “It will also serve as a preventative measure and will provide means to relay information anonymously and effectively so that officials can take action before any harm is done. Keeping schools safe is a top priority for me and my colleagues, and we believe that the Safe to Tell Act is an important step in the right direction.”

Safe to Tell Act Promueve la creación de programas de reporte de amenazas escolares.

Washington, DC: hoy, el Representante Jim Himes (CT-04), junto con los Representantes Mario Díaz-Balart (FL-25) y Anthony Gonzalez (OH-16), introdujeron la Ley de seguridad para informar. El proyecto de ley crea un programa de subvenciones para que los estados desarrollen sistemas, como líneas telefónicas directas, aplicaciones móviles o sitios web que permiten personas dar informacion en forma anónima de posibles amenazas a las escuelas.
“Con demasiada frecuencia, después de un tiroteo en la escuela, observamos el comportamiento del asesino y observamos que hubo señales de advertencia que no fueron denunciadas”, dijo Himes. “Las personas notan cosas que no parecen todo correctas, o que las ponen nerviosas, pero no saben cómo ni dónde informarlas. La ley Safe to Tell crea formas para que las personas compartan sus inquietudes sobre posibles amenazas y educa al público y a las fuerzas del orden público sobre cómo informar. Una advertencia más temprana y una mejor información salvarán vidas ”.

Family Institute of Connecticut is pleased to inform our members that the assisted suicide bill has “died in Committee” for the fifth time since 2013.

Assisted Suicide was on the Public Health Committee’s agenda last Friday, March 29th, but was “held” for lack of votes.  Then it was put back on the agenda for Monday, April 1st, and again “held” for lack of votes!

It was at this point that Rep. Jonathan Steinberg, the Committee Chairman, declared defeat, an announcement covered by the press.

Nevertheless, the bill was not officially dead until Wednesday, April 3rd, at 5 pm, the Committee’s deadline. In an abundance of caution, FIC deliberately waited until now to bring you news of this victory.

Rep. Steinberg and “Compassion and Choices,” the national pro-assisted suicide group, is claiming to have come closer than ever to getting it out of committee. That may or may not be true. C&C, in particular, has made claims about its progress before that were later exposed as false.

What we do know is that C&C’s local lobbyist was quoted in the press  as being “beyond disappointed” at the the failure of assisted suicide, to get even a vote in Committee.

FIC and our allies are now 5 for 5 at defeating assisted suicide bills in the very first committee of cognizance, with no bill to date getting a vote. This is an amazing feat in a socially liberal state like Connecticut. Moreover, Rep. Steinberg frankly acknowledges  that if the bill were to be raised next year, the result would likely be exactly the same, and that our allies on the committee on this issue, including a few progressive Democrats, are not going to budge.

We won this year for the same reason we always win. Assisted Suicide is not a typical left/right, religion vs. secularism, pro-life vs. “pro-choice” issue. Our disability rights allies at Second Thoughts CT, most of whom differ with FIC on other issues, made real the fact that Assisted Suicide is bad public policy that puts vulnerable people at risk.

We must continue to be vigilant. No bill is truly dead until the end of the session in early June. Though it is unlikely, the possibility always exists that a bill may come back in some other form.

And we should not put too much stock in Rep. Steinberg’s claim that there will be no public hearing for assisted suicide next year. If our opponents can bring it back, they will.

Most importantly, this year’s fight should be a wake-up call for the anti-assisted suicide movement in our state. The forces of death are back in Connecticut, and determined to extend their reach to those in the twilight of life.

We, too, must come back, with all the energy we brought to this fight in its early years and more.

Suicidio Asistido

El Instituto familiar de Connecticut se complace en informar a nuestros miembros que el proyecto de ley de suicidio asistido a “muerto en Comisión” por quinta vez desde 2013.
El suicidio asistido fue en la agenda del Comité de salud pública el pasado viernes 29 de marzo, pero fue “retenido” por falta de votos. ¡Luego se puso de nuevo en la agenda para el lunes, 1 de abril, y otra vez “celebrado” por falta de votos!
Fue en este momento que el representante Jonathan Steinberg, el Presidente del Comité, declaró la derrota, un anuncio cubierto por la prensa.
Sin embargo, el proyecto de ley no estaba oficialmente muerto hasta el miércoles 3 de abril, a las 5 de la tarde, fecha límite del Comité. En abundancia de precaución, FIC esperó deliberadamente hasta ahora para traerle noticias de esta victoria.
El representante Steinberg y “compasión y elecciones”, el grupo nacional de suicidio Pro-asistida, afirma haber llegado más cerca que nunca de salir del Comité. Eso puede o no ser cierto. C&C, en particular, ha hecho afirmaciones sobre su progreso antes de que posteriormente fueron expuestos como falsos.
Lo que sí sabemos es que el lobista local de C&C fue citado en la prensa como “más que decepcionado” por el fracaso del suicidio asistido, para conseguir incluso un voto en el Comité.
FIC y nuestros aliados ahora tienen 5 para 5 en la derrota de las cuentas de suicidio asistido en el primer Comité de conocimiento, sin factura hasta la fecha de obtener un voto. Esta es una hazaña asombrosa en un estado socialmente liberal como Connecticut. Por otra parte, el representante Steinberg reconoce sinceramente que si el proyecto de ley se recaudaría el próximo año, el resultado probablemente sería exactamente el mismo, y que nuestros aliados en la Comisión sobre este tema, incluidos algunos demócratas progresistas, no van a ceder.
Ganamos este año por la misma razón que siempre ganamos. El suicidio asistido no es un problema típico de izquierda/derecha, religión contra secularismo, pro-vida frente a “Pro-elección”. Nuestros aliados de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad en Second thoughts CT, la mayoría de los cuales difieren con la FIC sobre otras cuestiones, hicieron real el hecho de que el suicidio asistido es una mala política pública que pone en riesgo a las personas vulnerables.
Debemos seguir vigilando. Ningún proyecto de ley está realmente muerto hasta el final de la sesión a principios de junio. Aunque es improbable, la posibilidad siempre existe que un proyecto de ley puede volver en alguna otra forma.
Y no debemos poner demasiada acción en la afirmación de la Rep. Steinberg de que el próximo año no habrá audiencia pública para el suicidio asistido. Si nuestros oponentes pueden traerlo de vuelta, lo harán.
Lo que es más importante, la lucha de este año debe ser una llamada de despertador para el movimiento suicida anti-asistido en nuestro estado. Las fuerzas de la muerte están de vuelta en Connecticut, y decididos a extender su alcance a los que están en el crepúsculo de la vida.
Nosotros, también, debemos regresar, con toda la energía que trajimos a esta lucha en sus primeros años y más.
