State Police Update: At approximately 10:38pm on Saturday, December 23, 2023, the Connecticut State Police responded to a reported single-car motor vehicle collision on Route 15 South, prior to exit 42. Upon arrival, troopers found a white 2016 Toyota Corolla with Connecticut registration #BK35022 stopped in the middle of two travel lanes. Additionally, a white 2021 Infiniti Q50, bearing Connecticut registration #845ZWN, was in the right shoulder with its front end against the wood beam guardrail.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the Toyota, traveling southbound, collided with the concrete barrier in the median, leading it to an uncontrolled final rest in the left lane. The Infiniti, also traveling southbound in the left lane, struck the rear end of the Corolla. Mateo Gaviria (DOB: 05/14/1995), the operator of the Corolla, was outside of his vehicle at the time and was struck by one of the involved vehicles.

Despite life-saving measures performed by troopers, Gaviria succumbed to his injuries. Westport Emergency Medical Service Paramedic Winter Mute pronounced Gaviria deceased on the scene at 2302 hours. The occupants of the Infiniti were transported to Bridgeport Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The incident is currently under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact Trooper Rodriguez #828 at Ryan.Rodriguez@ct.gov.

2023-12-23@10:42pm–#Fairfield CT– #cttraffic– A serious 4-car crash on the Merritt Parkway southbound between exits 44 and 44 has the highway shutdown. One person who was ejected was possibly killed in the crash.
