WESTPORT, CT — Following yesterday’s significant flooding throughout Westport, Town crews continue working to evaluate roads, drainage systems, public infrastructure and other affected areas. Residents may continue to encounter standing water, debris, and other impacts as cleanup and inspections proceed.
Residents should continue to remain cautious and avoid areas that may still be hazardous.
Westport emergency responders handled 130 flood-related calls, rescued 13 people from vehicles and evacuated five residents from a care facility. Town officials continue working to document the extent of the damage to residences, businesses and public infrastructure throughout the community.
“We recognize the disruption and damage this event has caused and sincerely thank Westport residents and businesses for their patience, cooperation and understanding,” said First Selectman Kevin Christie. “We are incredibly grateful to our first responders, Public Works crews, emergency dispatchers, utility workers, volunteers and everyone who worked tirelessly to protect our community and begin the recovery process.”
A critical first step in determining whether Fairfield County and the State of Connecticut may be eligible for FEMA or other federal disaster assistance is for residents, property owners and businesses to report all flood-related damage.
The Town is asking anyone whose home or business was affected by the September 13 flooding to complete the Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security’s CrisisTrack Damage Self Report.
“Accurate reporting is essential to understanding the full scope of this event and ensuring our community’s impacts are properly documented,” said Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Nicholas Marsan. “Every report is important.”

Reports of damage to homes, rental properties and businesses will support the Initial Damage Assessment process being coordinated by state and local emergency management officials.
This survey is for information gathering and damage-assessment purposes only. Submitting a report is not a claim or application for assistance and does not guarantee that a disaster declaration will be issued or that federal, state or other assistance will become available. Property owners should also report property damage to their insurance companies.
The Town will continue assessing damage and addressing priority needs as recovery efforts proceed.
