Bridgeport News: Man Shot Dies

Bridgeport Police UPDATE: On August 28, 2020, at 2321 hours, a Shotspotter activation was received in the area of 725 Beechwood Avenue. A short time later, a gunshot victim arrived at St. Vincent’s Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the chest. After extensive efforts by medical staff to save the victim's life, he succumbed to his injuries at midnight. The victim is identified as George John, 25 of Shelton, CT. According to witnesses, John was shot on Beechwood Avenue and then transported by private vehicle to the hospital. Detectives processed a scene at the shooting location and are actively investigating the homicide of John. University Of Bridgeport Grant

Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) announced that University of Bridgeport received a $261,886.00 Student Support Services grant from the Department of Education, which will provide students from low-income families with academic advising, career counseling, tutoring, peer mentors, financial aid, workshops and seminars, and additional services.     “Access to higher education can’t be a luxury – it is an economic imperative and the best way to increase opportunity for every student, no matter where they live or what their family’s financial situation,” said Congressman Jim Himes. “If we want America to remain competitive in a 21st century economy, we have to ensure low-income students have the support they need to complete their degree and start their career. University of Bridgeport Student Support Services’ federal grant will increase the retention and success for University of Bridgeport students”   …

Bridgeport Awarded $434,000 Federal Grant to Improve Port Security and Water Rescue Equipment

Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Ganim, Bridgeport Federal delegation members, EOC Director Scott Appleby, Bridgeport Fire Chief Thode, and Police Department members joined to announce that the City of Bridgeport has been awarded a $433,616 federal grant to improve port security and water rescue equipment to ensure that the city’s security infrastructure is established, and able to save lives and property.
