Bridgeport News: Serious Crash

#Bridgeport CT– On July 16, 2020 at approximately 3:36pm Bridgeport Patrol Officers and Bridgeport Firefighters responded to the scene of a serious crash at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Center Street (CAR VS MOTORCYCLE).

A 25-year-old Bridgeport man was traveling west on Washington Avenue operating a 2011 black Suzuki GSR 750 motorcycle.  As the motorcycle approached the intersection of Washington Avenue and Center Street, a Bridgeport man, operating a 2008 blue Nissan Quest was traveling south on Center Street.  As the Nissan Quest travelled onto Washington Avenue, the car and motorcycle collided. The Nissan came to a stop on Washington Avenue just east of the intersection. This collision caused the operator of the motorcycle to be ejected and land in the street.  The motorcycle was located on Washington Avenue in the westbound lane of the intersection.

 

The operator of the Nissan Quest has been identified at 33-year-old Jonathan Colon of Bridgeport CT.  He was not injured and is cooperating with police.  The operator of the Suzuki motorcycle was transported to Bridgeport Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

 

The Bridgeport Police Accident Reconstruction Team has responded to conduct further investigation.  Anyone with additional information, related to this crash, is asked to contact the Bridgeport Police Department’s Traffic Division (Officer Judson Brown) at 203-576-7640.

Bridgeport News: Truck Hits Railroad Overpass

2020-07-16@5:44pm–#Bridgeport CT– A viewer sent in a picture of the railroad overpass on Howard Avenue at Railroad Avenue.  The Penske truck fled the scene.  Firefighters said the railroad overpass was not damaged.

Bridgeport News: Truck Fire Extends To Building

2020-07-16@3:44pm–#Bridgeport CT– #ctfire– firefighters were called at first for a tractor-trailer fire on Wordin Avenue turned out to be a dump-truck fire that extended to the roof of the building in the 100 block of Wordin Avenue.  Firefighters had three hose lines in operation in addition to aerial ladder truck as the fire extended to the building and on the roof.

 

Bridgeport News: Covid Assist to Residents and Businesses

Bridgeport, CT –  COVID-19 emergency declarations on Federal, State, and local levels have impacted individuals and businesses in one way or another.  The City of Bridgeport Emergency Operations Center (EOC) aims to assist residents and small businesses to find funding, services, and/or referrals to unmet needs related to COVID-19.

Emergency Operations Center will begin accepting applications July 13, 2020 and offers the opportunity to request:

  • Mental Health Services
  • Childcare Support
  • Transportation Needs/Services
  • Housing Needs
  • Food
  • Disability Assistance
  • Small Local Business Support
  • Education Support
  • Financial assistance for Utilities

Mayor Ganim stated, “Individuals and small businesses who have been impacted by COVID-19 directly or indirectly due to loss of job, or any other financial or medical burden should respond to this application. It is our hope and goal to match eligible residents with the appropriate resources to get through these trying times.”

EOC with non-profit organizations such as American Red Cross, United Way, and Salvation Army, will serve on the Long-Term Recovery Committee to review submitted applications and determine allocation of the various resources available for COVID-19 related relief.

Bridgeport News: Thermometers To Be Distributed

WHO: Mayor Ganim, Health Director Morrissey, Superintendent Testani, City Council members, Wilbur Cross School staff, parents and students of Bridgeport Public Schools

WHAT: Mayor Ganim to join Health Director Morrissey and Superintendent Testani to distribute 4,000 Kinsa Smart thermometers to parents of BPS students during Summer Food Service Grab & Go meals at Wilbur Cross Elementary School. Parents and family members will also be provided with instruction on how to properly use the thermometer, normal temperature reading and when to contact their physician or community health center in an effort to encourage families to monitor their health and safeguard against the spread of COVID-19 among families and the community.

Bridgeport News: Overnight Fire Tragedy Averted

2020-07-14@3:44am– Firefighters’ quick response time coupled with their simultaneous coordinated efforts prevented at a multi-family house fire at 204 Wheeler Avenue. Car fire in the underground parking underneath the structure was fully engulfed. Firefighters quickly got everyone out of the building while others battled the blaze with the water on the truck and others hooked to the hydrants. My travel time to the scene was six minutes the scene and firefighters had the bulk of the fire out. Within the hour firefighters made sure the fire did not extend to the apartments, metered the building and the residents were able to return to their apartments.
