#Westport News: Forgery and Larceny Charges

#Westport CT– On Monday November 19, 2018 at approximately 2:33pm a resident responded to police headquarters reporting that she had been the victim of fraud. She explained that two withdrawals totaling $2240.00 had been successfully made from her checking account without her authorization. She additionally reported that a third withdrawal had been attempted but not processed in the amount of $1240.00. All three of these transactions had been processed in person at local bank branches. Through investigation which included working with the victim’s bank’s security personnel, two suspects were developed in this incident. It was subsequently learned that these two suspects had allegedly gone to local bank branches presenting forged checks bearing the victim’s account information in order to make or attempt these transactions. While in the course of these transactions, the two suspects had positively identified themselves through the presentation of identification and signing of the checks in their names. Surveillance cameras at their various branches also captured images of the suspects. Based on this information, arrest warrants were applied for and granted for both of these individuals, one of which was identified as Simone Fulton. Fulton was reported to have been responsible for the unsuccessful attempt to negotiate the forged check in the amount of $1240.00. On Thursday December 12, 2019 at approximately 7:19pm, Connecticut State Police Troop C contacted this department advising that based on our active arrest warrant they currently had Simone Fulton in their custody. Westport Mailer

(Westport, CT) The Westport Police Department has received a number of inquiries from our residents relative to recent mailings and telephone calls made by the Connecticut Fraternal Order of Police soliciting charitable contributions to their organization. Specifically these inquiries have been in regard to whether there is a direct affiliation between the Westport Police Department and the Connecticut Fraternal Order of Police as it relates to these fundraising efforts.

As the mailer sent by the Fraternal or Police is somewhat ambiguous in stating “protecting your home in Westport” and for the purpose of clarification, we ask that you please note the following information relative to this matter. Although the Connecticut Fraternal Order of Police is a legitimate charitable organization which does work to support various law enforcement related causes around the state, this organization has absolutely no direct affiliation with the Westport Police Department or its various internal groups. With that being said, those wishing to donate to this organization should do so with the complete information that any contributions made are not received by and do not directly benefit the Westport Police Department in any way.

It is also important to note that the Westport Police Department does periodically conduct fundraising drives related to the Westport Police Union, Westport Police Benevolent Association, Westport Police Scholarship Foundation, Westport Police Athletic League and Westport Police Department K9 Unit. These fundraising efforts will always be clearly marked or otherwise stated as originating from these various entities that are in fact directly affiliated with this agency. Please also note that all of these groups are privately funded in all or part through donations from the public, and any contributions made do go directly to support them.

Westport Police Department Investigates Stolen Motor Vehicle Complaint

(Westport, CT) At approximately 2:43am on the morning of Sunday November 24, 2019, the Westport Police Department was contacted by a resident in the Compo Beach area. He was reporting that he was watching out his window as his vehicle was being stolen from his driveway. The complainant provided relevant information and updates to dispatch while officers quickly began to set a perimeter around the area of the victim’s residence. Shortly after the initial call, one of our officers observed two vehicles traveling in his direction. One of these two was recognized as the vehicle that had just been reported as a stolen. The officer was able to successfully deploy Stop Sticks, which quickly flattened one of the tires on the suspect vehicle, effectively disabling it shortly after the initial contact. As it passed, the officer was also able to observe that the vehicle was occupied by a lone male. The suspect vehicle briefly left the officer’s sight as he returned to his patrol car to follow it. It was subsequently located a short distance from the initial point at which it contacted the stop sticks; on Riverside Avenue. The suspect had abandoned it, leaving it running. A secondary perimeter was set up in this area with the assistance of officers from the Norwalk Police Department and members of the Connecticut State Police. A systematic search of the area including canine tracks yielded no contact with the suspect, who is believed to have been traveling in companion with the secondary vehicle initially seen by the officer deploying the Stop Sticks. This secondary vehicle is further believed to be the one in which both left the immediate area, eluding police. As of this writing we continue to actively investigate this case and work towards positively identifying the suspect(s). The stolen vehicle was quickly returned to its owner with damage only to a rear wheel. 21:02 2 In speaking with the victim, he reported that a second car parked in his driveway had also been entered but that nothing had been taken.

An incident that would usually have resulted in a high speed pursuit, which could have many negative outcomes, did not, thanks to the quick thinking, quick action and coordinated effort of all those working this morning. However, for many reasons, this will not always be the end result of these types of calls. We ask that you please let this incident serve as a reminder that vehicle break- ins and stolen motor vehicles continue to occur in ours and neighboring communities at great frequency, especially in the overnight hours. In the majority of Westport cases of vehicles being entered which resulted in thefts, the doors were left unlocked. In almost all Westport cases of vehicles being stolen, keys were left inside of the unlocked vehicle. Please lock your car and bring your keys inside.

Please remember to take valuables out of your car for the night, such as purses, wallets and electronics. It is also good practice to keep outside lights on and motion lights activated. Please notify the police department if it appears that your vehicle was entered or if you should observe anything suspicious in your neighborhood. No one knows your neighborhood better than you do, and the information you provide is vital to our crime prevention efforts. Anyone with additional information relative to this investigation is asked to contact the Westport Police Department Detective Bureau at (203) 341-6080.

Occupational cancer has proven to be the new epidemic we face in the fire service, far too many members of the fire service have been lost to this relentless illness. Rest in Peace Turk, you have served your community with tremendous honor and will be greatly missed. “And, you know, it’s not easy. Every morning you wake up and you got to put your feet on the floor because you have a family looking after you and hopefully, you know, I’ll go back to work tonight actually, and then tomorrow I’m back in New York City starting chemo again. You know, and that’ll wipe me out for three days until I have to go back to work again. You know, and it’s tough on my kids, and it’s tough on my wife…”
