The Westport Fire Department was called to a loud “hissing” noise on Jesup Green, which is located on Jesup Rd in front of the Westport Library. The fire department responded with two engines and the shift commander. The rescue company was clearing off of another call in the area and responded as well. The first arriving fire unit reported a high-pressure gas line had been cut. It was discovered that a tent crew had allegedly struck the line while setting up tents for an event this past weekend. The leak did not become evident until the company returned to remove the large tent stake. Westport Fire deployed a protective hose line and evacuated the surrounding buildings. #WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio), both members of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Tuesday introduced an amendment to the FY 2019 Defense Appropriations bill that would transfer $40 million to the U.S. Department of State for the Global Engagement Center (GEC), as authorized in law and agreed to in a joint Memorandum of Agreement, to expose and counter foreign propaganda and influence. The $40 million allotted for FY 2018 has not yet been transferred to the GEC. Murphy and Portman introduced the Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act, which was signed into law in December 2016. #Westport CT – First Selectman Jim Marpe announced today that the Westport Police Department, in partnership with the Department of Human Services, is launching a new Voluntary Registry for People with Disabilities. Mr. Marpe noted that the confidential and voluntary registry service will assist officers and other emergency services personnel in the event of an incident involving vulnerable citizens with disabilities. The goal is to enhance first responders’ proficiency in addressing the needs of residents whose disability may make them susceptible to miscommunications, misinterpretations of behaviors and many other avoidable scenarios.
