Bridgeport Police are investigating a homicide after a 61-year-old man was found deceased inside an apartment on Brooks Street. Officers responded to the residence and confirmed the death, prompting detectives to take over the scene. Authorities have classified the case as a homicide. Police say the investigation is ongoing and additional information has not yet been released.

Bridgeport Public Schools continues to take focused action to address long standing financial challenges while prioritizing students, staff, and equitable access to a high quality education. On July 24, 2025, the district completed an independent forensic audit conducted by the Connecticut State Department of Education. The audit included 34 recommendations to strengthen financial systems, transparency, and internal controls. Mayor Ganim announced that the City of Bridgeport has been recognized as the 2nd Place winner in the 2026 Healthy and Sustainable Communities Grant Awards. The award, presented by The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) in partnership with the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America (ABFHA), includes a $75,000 grant to begin a pilot program, The Greenhouse Impact. The Greenhouse Impact program will be Bridgeport’s first intergenerational learning experience that will cater to Lighthouse students and seniors from the East Side Senior Center, as they learn to maintain a community greenhouse. The Bridgeport Police arrested two men from the New Haven area on Thursday after they robbed the Gala Foods Supermarket at 1457 Fairfield Avenue at knifepoint and then engaged officers in a motor vehicle pursuit. Osvaldo Beard-Beltran 30, of North Haven, was charged with Robbery in the Second Degree, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon, Assault in the Third Degree, Threatening in the Second Degree, Breach of Peace in the Second Degree, Larceny in the Sixth Degree, Illegal Possession of a Weapon in a Motor Vehicle and Engaging Police in a Pursuit. Bridgeport Police say Gala Foods on Fairfield Avenue was robbed leading to a pursuit that ended in Woodbridge with two people taken into custody. No injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.
The Bridgeport Police have an arrest warrant for the man who murdered a young mother, Eveling-IIena Rayo-Mairena, 24, in front her child in October 2025 on Black Rock Avenue. The warrant charges Douglas Jose Centeno-Vargas, 30, with Murder, Risk of Injury to a Minor and Tampering with Evidence. The bond is $4 million. Detectives identified Centeno-Vargas as the suspect roughly 12 hours into their investigation. They subsequently learned that after dragging Rayo-Mairena out of a car and leaving her on the street at around 9:30 p.m. on October 21st, 2025, Centano-Vargas went to JFK Airport in New York and boarded a plane at around 3:30 a.m. on October 22nd bound for Nicaragua.
