(Westport, CT 8/24/2022) - With the start of Westport’s schools on Tuesday, August 30, the policedepartment will be increasing its traffic enforcement in school zones with a “Back to School”enforcement and education campaign. Officers will be looking out for drivers who are using cellphones, speeding, and disregarding school bus signals.The Westport Police Department is committed to protecting children from motorists who disregardConnecticut’s traffic safety laws, especially around school zones and bus stops where studentscongregate. Governor Ned Lamont is directing Connecticut’s extreme hot weather protocol tobe activated beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, and remaining ineffect through 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5, 2022. The purpose of the protocol is toensure that the most vulnerable populations receive protection from the hotconditions. While enacted, a system is set up for state agencies, municipalities, andother partners to coordinate with United Way 2-1-1 to make sure that informationregarding cooling centers is available statewide, providing a location to get somerelief from the hot conditions. Westport firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire on Island Way. Theinitial dispatch was four Engines, one Rescue company, and the Shift Commander. Amutual aid Truck company from Norwalk also responded.Companies arrived and reported an exterior deck fire on the 2nd floor with an extension intothe wall and mechanical room of the house. A hose line was deployed from Engine 4 andthe fire was quickly extinguished. Arriving companies provided salvage, overhaul, andventilation. The fire was contained to the area of origin and is being investigated by the Westport FireMarshal’s office. #Westport CT--On June 30, 2022, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Westport Police officers responded to the TD Bank located at 185 Main Street on a report that a man was attempting to fraudulently obtain a debit card by impersonating the real account holder. The suspect was still in the bank when officers arrived. He said his name was Edward Tucker and presented a Pennsylvania driver's license with that name. The bank employee said that a Norwalk branch of TD Bank notified the Westport location that the suspect was supposedly trying to engage in the same fraudulent activity there and to be aware should he come to Westport. The Westport Sunrise Rotary will be holding their annual Great Duck Race eventon Saturday, July 9, 2022. This year’s Duck Race will feature a giant sluice on JesupGreen as well as food trucks and family-friendly activities in the Taylor Lot from10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. #Westport CT--The annual PAL fireworks display is set for Thursday June 30, 2022, with a rain date of Friday July 1, 2022. This is the largest annual Westport event featuring heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic affecting all roads south of Greens Farms Road between Compo Road South and Hillspoint Road. It is recommended that spectators plan to arrive early as traffic delays are inevitable. Daytime Compo Beach visitors are reminded the beach closes at 4:00 PM. Only those vehicles with fireworks passes will be allowed to remain within the beach. We ask those with fireworks passes to be standing by their vehicles at that time so Parks and Recreation staff can collect their pass. The beach should reopen to ticket…
