First Pool of Mosquitoes in Stratford Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Stratford, Connecticut (July 29, 2025) - The Stratford Health Department announced that the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station reported mosquitos trapped at Beaver Dam Road last week have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). The isolates were from the Culex salinarius, a mammal biting species of mosquitoes. “It is usually around this time of year where the state reports that they have found pools of mosquitos testing positive for West Nile Virus in our area, and we expect to see more positive pools into late summer. I urge all residents to take the necessary and simple steps to prevent exposure and bites,” said Andrea Boissevain, Director of Health. Fairfield, CT – On Monday, July 28, 2025, Lazaro Pomeraniec of Westport was arrested by theFairfield Police Department for two additional counts of Sexual Assault in the 4th Degree. Thesecharges stem from two separate incidents involving individuals under his psychiatric care.One of these incidents had already been reported and was under investigation prior toPomeraniec’s initial arrest on June 24, 2025. (HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont today announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags in Connecticut lowered to half-staff in honor of Plainville Firefighter Raymond “Ray” Alan Moreau, who died in the line of duty this morning while operating at fire at a residence in Plainville. Flags should be lowered effective immediately and remain lowered until sunset on the date of interment, which has not yet been determined.
