Fairfield News: Narcan Training

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (June 11, 2019) – Connecticut has been confronted with the opioid crisis which has led to an increase in opioid related deaths. Since January 2019, there have already been approximately 12 emergency room visits, of Fairfield residents, for a suspected opioid related drug overdoses.

In an effort to combat this issue, the Fairfield Health Department along with Fairfield CARES, and The HUB: Behavioral Health Action Organization for Southwestern CT will be hosting a Narcan training on Tuesday, June 25 th , 2019 at the Fairfield Public Library from 9:30am – 10:30am in the Memorial Room. This training is FREE of charge and a limited number of Narcan kits will be available to attendees. Opioids are a class of drugs that may be prescribed or illegally obtained and including medications such as OxyContin and Morphine as well as Heroin and Fentanyl. Fentanyl, has been responsible for a considerable amount of opioid overdoses due to the potency of the drug. Narcan, also known as Naloxone, is a drug that is used to temporarily counteract an opioid overdose. Administering Narcan during an overdose can save someone’s life until they are able to seek proper medical attention. Opioid related overdose deaths are directly effecting Fairfield residents. Since 2012, there have been approximately 23 deaths of Fairfield residents due to an opioid overdose. If you have a loved one struggling with an opioid addiction it is critical that you have access to Narcan and get trained on how to administer it.

Connecticut’s opioid overdose emergency department rate is 1.7 times higher than the national rate. In order to address the opioid epidemic, House Bill HB-7159 AN ACT ADDRESSING OPIOID USE was recently been passed by the CT Senate. This bill addresses various aspects that contribute to the epidemic. House Bill-7159 aims to strengthen the oversight of prescriptions by allowing a trained pharmacy technician to have access to the State’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, requires a practitioner who writes a prescription for an opioid drug for a period longer than 12 weeks to establish a treatment agreement and plan with their patient, and requires pharmacists to offer counseling to patients on their medications. HB-7159 enhances communication between health care providers and patients involving opioid use. Making changes to reduce the misuse of prescription opioids is essential for improving this crisis and gaining access to Narcan and becoming knowledgeable will prevent opioid related deaths. Westport News: 1st Quarter Taxes Due Even If You Didn’t Receive A Bill

Westport, CT – Tax Collector Harry Whiteley reminded residents today that first quarter real estate taxes, personal property taxes, motor vehicle taxes and sanitary sewer use and assessment charges are due July 1, 2019.  Taxpayers have until August 1, 2019 to pay taxes without penalty.  Accounts will be subject to an 18 percent (1.5 percent/month) penalty charge if paid late.  Minimum interest charge is $2.00.

Failure to receive a bill does not abate the charges or interest.

Real estate taxes, personal property taxes, motor vehicle taxes and sanitary use and assessment bills may be paid by credit card, debit card, or direct withdrawal from a checking account on-line at https://www.westportct.gov/ and choosing “Pay Taxes Online” from the homepage.

Checks should be made payable to “Town of Westport” and mailed to:

Stratford looks to acquire lighthouse

STRATFORD- Mayor Laura R. Hoydick announced Friday that the Town of Stratford has entered into a license agreement with the United States Coast Guard for the property at the Stratford Point Lighthouse. Under terms of the agreement, the Town of Stratford has use of the lighthouse property and associated buildings and structures, while the Coast Guard continues to operate and maintain the light.  The Town agrees to maintain and upkeep the property and buildings.  Payment from the Town for the agreement is a single dollar.

The Mayor says that she hopes to see the location become available to the public, and available to reserve for events and functions after some preparation and restoration is performed at the site.

“For generations the Stratford Point Lighthouse has served as the unofficial symbol of Stratford,” said Mayor Hoydick.  “When many people think of Stratford, they think of this lighthouse – its iconic structure and appearance instantly recall the essence of this town.  It is an essential part of our heritage and our history.  I want to thank the United States Coast Guard for entering into this agreement with Stratford which will allow the public to have access to this previously secured property and its incredible scenic vista. I am delighted that we will be able to afford that opportunity to residents and visitors in the very near future.”

Mayor Hoydick stated that maintenance and upkeep of the grounds has already begun this week under the direction of the Department of Public Works.  Plans include some restoration work to the keeper’s cottage, the oil house and the lighthouse itself – including a new coat of paint that will refresh the familiar white and red-striped façade.

During colonial times a bonfire was lit at Stratford Point, where the Housatonic River meets Long Island Sound, when a boat was expected during fog.  In 1821, Congress allocated $4,000 to purchase four acres of land on Stratford Point from Betsy Walker, and a wooden octagonal lighthouse was constructed in 1822. It was only the third light station erected on Long Island Sound.

Congress appropriated additional funding in 1880, and a new forty-foot-tall, brick-lined, cast-iron tower was erected on the point, and a two-story, eight-room dwelling.  The all-white tower was given the distinctive marking of a reddish-brown band around its middle on May 15, 1899, a distinguishing feature that remains to this day.

United States Coast Guard personnel continued to live on the premises until 1978, when automation was installed and the light was controlled remotely from Eaton’s Neck on Long Island.  The Coast Guard resumed occupation of the site in 1982 to prevent vandalism and secure the location.

Bridgeport News: Early Morning Monday Robbery

2019-06-10 @ 4:40AM–Police were called on a report of a robbery.  The victims reported that 3 males were approached by a female offering to go for drinks.  The female got into a vehicle with a male driver and the three males followed them to several locations.  The male driver got out of the vehicle and went to the victims car with a firearm drawn.  The male took the victims to the rear yard of a house on Soundview Avenue where he and the female took all of the victim’s belongings at gunpoint.  The responsible assailants are reported to be a black male, short and slim.  The female is described to be a Hispanic female, short and stout.  The responsible parties fled in a blue Nissan Altima on Soundview Avenue towards Chopsey Hill Road.  They also took the victim’s car keys, the vehicle was towed for safekeeping.
