Westport News: Police Make Handgun and Drug Arrest

#Westport, CT)- At approximately 9:00 am on Sunday, April 22nd, an officer conducting stationary radar in the area of 180 Bayberry Lane observed a vehicle traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. The radar unit indicated the vehicle was traveling at a rate of 63mph in the 25mph zone. As the officer initiated a motor vehicle stop, he smelled a distinct odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The operator was identified as Tony J. Bowens Jr., 23, of Shelton, CT. During the stop, officers learned Bowens had an outstanding arrest warrant for Failure to Appear 2nd and that his Connecticut pistol permit was revoked. BRIDGEPORT – Bridgeport Mayor and Democratic candidate for Governor Joe Ganim today called for the Connecticut General Assembly to pass Senate Bill No. 540, AN ACT AUTHORIZING SPORTS WAGERING AND ONLINE LOTTERY DRAW GAMES IN THE STATE.  The bill sets up legal, highly regulated, taxable sports betting in Connecticut.  If enacted, it is estimated that legalizing sports betting could bring the state another $44 million in annual revenue.  Gaming industry estimates in Connecticut currently show that state residents spend more than $600 million in illegal sports betting, generating some $36 Million in profits for illegal sports bookmakers.  Introducing legal sports wagering that could be taxed by the state at a rate of 15% could significantly eat into that black market.  Mayor…

Westport News: Caretaker Pawns Items

#Westport News: On 02/26/2018, an officer reviewing recent Westport pawn and precious metals transactions observed multiple silver items sold by Maribeth Nixon. The silver items were engraved with initials different than her own. Nixon was known to the department as a caretaker for a local elderly woman with initials matching those engraved on the silver items. Detectives later interviewed Nixon and learned she had stolen the silver from her client. An arrest warrant application was submitted and granted by a judge. On 04/17/2018, Nixon turned herself in at police headquarters on the active warrant. She was charged with 53a-124 Larceny 3 rd and held on $25,000 court set bond. Bridgeport News: 1 Dead In Motorcycle Crash

#Bridgeport CT-- Police say that just before 7pm Sunday, the motorcycle was traveling south on Park Avenue when it collided with a white sedan that was slowly turning onto Park Avenue. The motorcycle collided with the car throwing the driver and passenger. The driver of the motorcycle, Danillo Andrade, 31, remains in the hospital from bleeding on the brain and a fractured wrist. His passenger Miranda Elienai died from serious head injuries. The driver of the car was identified Tremaine Wilson of New Haven. No charges have been filed and police continue to investigate.
