Just after 11:30pm Wednesday night a police officer radioed in that he was involved in a car accident with a Metro Taxi at the corner of Brooks Street and Arctic Street. Two ambulances were sent to the scene and witnesses tell me both the officer and taxi driver went to the hospital with unknown injuries.
A man was injured when man hit a parked sport utility vehicle and went airborne landing on its roof. The accident happened on Marion Street and the man was transported around the corner to St. Vincent's Hospital. Robin Curry who was moving into her apartment across the street witnessed the accident while unloading her moving truck. Robin told us the driver wound up on the passenger's side of the car and was able to get himself out of the car. She and others told the man not to move. He was complaining of neck and head injuries, but" he was able to walk away, and he wore a shirt that said lucky" Curry said!
Just after 3:30pm Wednesday afternoon firefighters responded to a school bus fire on Verna Hill and Greenfield Hill Road. When firefighters arrived they found the rear of the bus on fire where the engine is mounted. There were about 20 students on board and the bus driver was able to evacuate the students with no problem. Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola told us the driver went back to investigate the cause of the fire and was overcome with smoke. He is being treated for smoke inhalation. Former State Senator Ernie Newton Monday night continued his comeback from a federal corruption conviction seven years ago to claim the Democratic endorsement for the State Senate seat he was forced to relinquish. He won the endorsement for Connecticut’s 23rd State Senate District over incumbent Ed Gomes and State Rep. Andres Ayala at the party convention at Testo’s Restaurant. “This campaign is about redemption and opportunity of our people and our community,” Newton announced to cheering supporters inside Testo’s Restaurant at 6:46 p.m. just minutes after he was endorsed, adding he was sorry for the mistakes he had made that led to his prison time. One man was injured and transported to a local hospital after a two car crash on North Avenue around 5:30 Monday. Traffic was tied up at this busy 5 way intersection in front of Freedom Fuels near Dewy Street. The injuries to the drivers are unknown but you can easily see the driver's door was badly damage and intruding into the driver's compartment. Police quickly got the vehicles to the side of the road and got traffic flowing once again.
First Selectman Tetreau announced today that beginning Monday, May 28, 2012, when the Town celebrates Memorial Day with its annual parade, a sign will be placed by the Fairfield War Memorial Honor Roll in front of the Old Town Hall to encourage Veterans to have their names placed on this special Wall.
