Fairfield’s Automated Speed Enforcement in School Zones Now Active Violations Subject to Fines in Designated School Zones Fairfield, Conn., June 1, 2026—The Town of Fairfield announced today that its Automated Traffic Enforcement Safety Device (ATESD) program in designated school zones is now fully operational. Following a warning period from May 1 through May 31 designed to educate drivers and encourage compliance, drivers who exceed the speed limit and are traveling unreasonably fast will now be subject to fines. Six school zones were selected based on crash history, engineering analysis and feedback from the community. Fairfield Police Chief Defends School Zone Speed Camera Program in Open Letter

Fairfield Police Chief Michael Paris released an open letter defending the town’s new school zone speed camera program, saying the goal is to slow drivers down and prevent deadly crashes. Paris, a certified crash reconstructionist, said the program is rooted in public safety concerns after years of investigating serious and fatal crashes caused by speeding. The chief addressed criticism over the cameras operating 24 hours a day, stating that speeding laws apply at all hours and that some of the worst crashes occur overnight when drivers take greater risks. Hwang Calls For Fairfield Speed Camera Pause

Tony Hwang, ranking Republican leader on the Transportation Committee, is calling on Fairfield officials to pause the town’s speed camera program after warning-period data projected nearly 190,000 violations in May. Hwang said the number is “alarming and shocking,” but not surprising, arguing that speeding has become normalized across Fairfield and other Connecticut communities. He said he continues to support speed and red-light cameras as a public safety tool, but believes Fairfield should use the May warning period to improve education, signage, public awareness and transparency before full enforcement continues. Please help support veterans by bringing food or making a donation during Fairfield’s Memorial Day Parade For the 15th consecutive year, during the Memorial Day Parade in Fairfield on Monday, May 25th, the Rotary Club will be collecting non-perishable food/canned goods and money, cash, credit card, or checks made out to “Homes for the Brave,” along the parade route to donate and support local Veterans. As is tradition, local Veterans will be riding in the truck and helping collect.
