STRATFORD, CONNECTICUT – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to conduct a series ofsmall prescribed burns between Monday, October 4, and Friday ,October, in the Great MeadowsMarsh Unit of Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. The burn is part of a larger effort toimprove habitat for wildlife, increase resilience of the marsh to rising sea levels and coastal storms,and reduce mosquito nuisance problems. Prescribed burns occur under a tight set of conditions to minimize impacts to wildlife and the public.The dates of the burns will depend on weather conditions, tides, and proper fine fuel moisture. Usingmultiple small burns will reduce smoke and increase safety. Smoke may still be visible from the westside of the Great Meadows Marsh Unit.The Service is…

New Seatbelt Law In Effect

HARTFORD, CT) – Monday, state Representative Cristin McCarthy Vahey (D-Fairfield) joined Governor Ned Lamont, Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) Office of Highway Safety, and AAA to announce that beginning today, October 1, 2021, Connecticut law will now require all passengers to buckle up, regardless of where they are positioned in the vehicle. The new occupant protection law will mandate that all passengers in the back seat buckle up. Pre-existing law only required rear-seat passengers under 16 to buckle up, even though proper restraint use is effective for all ages.
