“The Circus” explores the colorful history of this popular, influential, and distinctly American form of entertainment, from the first one-ring show at the end of the 18th century to 1956, when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey big top was pulled down for the last time. As the home state of P.T. Barnum, Connecticut plays a unique role in this history.

It’s never too early to light up the holidays! Before rehearsals begin for the 2018 Christmas Spectacular, the Radio City Rockettes will visit six local tri-state area libraries to engage with fans and families. Join the Rockettes from September 12-14 for holiday lights-themed crafting sessions where children and families from the local communities will be able to decorate jars filled with festive lights. The visits are free and open to the public. The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes will run from November 9, 2018- January 1, 2019 at Radio City Music Hall. The production continues to be enhanced with fresh and dynamic content while preserving what has made the Christmas Spectacular a beloved holiday tradition. In 2017, the Christmas Spectacular introduced technological enhancements that immerse the entire audience in the production – including the extension of digital mapping to cover all eight of the venue’s iconic proscenium arches and the installation of an 8K LED wall, one of the largest in the world. The 2018 production includes performances of classic numbers such as “Rag Dolls,” a high-energy tap routine featuring the Rockettes as rag dolls, “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” which sets the standard for the Rockettes style of precision dance, and “Living Nativity,” which takes audiences on an awe- inspiring journey. Tickets for the 2018 Christmas Spectacular are on sale now at www.rockettes.com/christmas.

#Bridgeport CT– Ground breaking for the new Harbor Yard Amphitheater took place this morning after phase one of three is complete. Design one was design, structural engineering, final drawings and permitting. The new structure is expected to be twelve stories or one hundred and twenty feet tall, almost as tall as the People’s Bank Tower down the street on Main Street. Phase two will be demolition, site work and footings put in place. State three will spend $15 million with 258 construction jobs.
Jim Koplik of Live Nation Connecticut promises great talent to visit the amphitheater, Koplik also runs the Xfinity Center in Hartford. Koplick said the Arena at Harbor Yard is under utilized and he hopes to bring new business to them as well. The Arena has limited dates due to sports teams that play their home games there. The amphitheater’s projected opening date is in June 2019.
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo welcomes eight spur-thigh tortoises (Geochelone sulcata) who are making the Zoo their home for the summer. The African spur thigh tortoise, also known as the spurred tortoise, is the third largest species of tortoise in the world, after the Galapagos tortoise and the Aldabra giant tortoise. It is the largest of all mainland tortoises.
“Summertime is the right time, so it’s a great time to bring such special animals here as our temporary guests,” said Zoo Director Gregg Dancho. “Tortoises also love summer heat, and the spur thigh tortoise is particularly well-adapted to hot temperatures. Also there is the educational message that these wonderful animals do not make good pets! Make wise not wild choices!”
“The Zoo will be home to the tortoises until sometime this fall,” added Dancho. “Guests can find them next to the Victorian Greenhouse.”
African spur thigh tortoises are large and push and knock over heavy objects with ease. One of their unusual behaviors is that they may ram each other, with males especially ramming females. The force with which one tortoise rams another can be intimidating, given their strength. They are generally slow moving, however, in order to conserve energy. They dig burrows in the ground to take shelter from their harsh, hot habitat, with some tunnel systems extending ten or more feet underground. Adult tortoises average 18 inches in shell length and 70-100 pounds in weight. Specimens reaching two to three feet in length and more than 150 pounds, however, are not uncommon.
They are able to go weeks without food. In the wild, they mainly eat grasses and leaves of desert scrub. They get the water they need from the plants they eat. African spur thigh tortoises’ conservation status is listed currently as vulnerable, due to habitat loss and over-collection for the pet trade.
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is closer than you think and open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Adult admission (ages 12 & older) is $15.00, children (ages 3 -11) is $12.00, senior admission (62 and older) is just $11.00, and children under 3 years old are free. Zoo members also are admitted free. Parking at the Zoo is free of charge.
BRIDGEPORT – Bridgeport Mayor and Democratic candidate for Governor Joe Ganim today called for the Connecticut General Assembly to pass Senate Bill No. 540, AN ACT AUTHORIZING SPORTS WAGERING AND ONLINE LOTTERY DRAW GAMES IN THE STATE. The bill sets up legal, highly regulated, taxable sports betting in Connecticut. If enacted, it is estimated that legalizing sports betting could bring the state another $44 million in annual revenue. Gaming industry estimates in Connecticut currently show that state residents spend more than $600 million in illegal sports betting, generating some $36 Million in profits for illegal sports bookmakers. Introducing legal sports wagering that could be taxed by the state at a rate of 15% could significantly eat into that black market. Mayor Ganim is calling on the General Assembly to open up another stream of revenue at little or no cost to taxpayers.
“Connecticut residents are already spending hundreds of millions of dollars every year in the illegal black market to bet on sporting events, so why not set up a legal wagering system that we can tax and that is safer for consumers?” said Mayor Ganim. “This fits very well into a comprehensive gaming strategy for Connecticut and could potentially earn the state another $45 million in revenue every year. No one can argue that we need the money, and this will also help spur some additional job creation as well – at no cost to taxpayers. I urge the legislature – before the current session adjourns – open up legal sports betting as another revenue stream for Connecticut as is done currently in nearly 40 countries around the globe.”
Many states considering legalizing sports betting are awaiting a decision by the United States Supreme Court in the case of Murphy v. NCAA in which a federal law banning legalized sports betting except in the states of Nevada, Montana, Delaware, and Oregon is being challenged as unconstitutional by the state of New Jersey. Legalized sports betting is now supported by all major professional sports leagues such as the NBA, NHL, NFL, and Major League Baseball, as well as fantasy sports leagues such as Draft Kings and FanDuel. If authorized nationally, it is estimated that sports betting could generate as much as $150 Billion in profits taxable by states every year.
