The Stratford Library “Books Over Coffee” program continues its 2019 spring series with a discussion of Tommy Orange’s acclaimed debut novel, There There, on Wednesday, May 29th at noon. The program, hosted by Stratford educator and author Kathleen Faggella, is free and open to the public. Tommy Orange’s groundbreaking novel poses the question, “What does it really mean to be a Native American?” There There follows a unique cast of teenagers and elders who ask this question in light of the complexity of the modern world. Their detachment from tradition, their fractured families and the hustle and bustle of life in contemporary Oakland, California, make their identity as Indians even more elusive. Tommy Orange’s first novel is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen, and it introduces a brilliant new author at the start of a major career.

 

“Books Over Coffee” will be held in the Stratford Library’s Lovell Room beginning at noon on May 29th . Readers are invited to bring a bag lunch to the program and coffee and tea is also served. Limited reading copies of There There are available for loan at the library’s Circulation Desk. All “Books Over Coffee” titles are available at the Library or on Kindle eReaders for loan. Patrons can also download the ebook or eaudiobook through the OverDrive app at the Library. “Books Over Coffee” will conclude the season on June 26 with a look at Delia Owens’ current bestseller, Where the Crawdads Sing. 2019-05-28 @ 10:50pm–#Stratford CT–The Honeyspot Gulf located at 245 Honeyspot Rosd was robbed at gunpoint.  The suspect fled in a large blue or black SUV.  The robber netted $50 in one dollar bills.

2019-05-20 @ 4:40pm–#Stratford CT– Firefighters from the marine unit helping a boat at the mouth of the Housatonic River for a boat taking on water.  According to radio reports the boat is in 3-4 feet of water and the boat intentionally drove it aground to prevent it from sinking.

2019-05-20 @ 4:40pm – #Stratford CT – Bomberos de la unidad marina ayudando a un bote en la boca del río Housatonic por que un bote en el agua. Según los informes de la radio, el boto está en 3-4 pies de agua y el barco intencionalmente lo condujo para evitar que se hundiera.

On May 1, 2019 the Stratford Police Department and staff members of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program (TPEP), conducted unannounced compliance inspections of establishments that sell tobacco products. The inspections were performed in an effort to determine compliance with state laws concerning the prohibition of the sale of cigarettes and/or tobacco products to youth under the age of eighteen.

Under the direction and supervision of DMHAS investigators, an underage youth employed by the Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, entered the establishments and attempted to purchase tobacco products.

 

A total of fifteen (15) unannounced compliance inspections were conducted. Of this total, five (5) establishments were found to be in violation of the General Statutes of Connecticut, Sec. 53- 344(b), Sale of Tobacco to Minors under Eighteen. The offending clerks at these establishments were issued and infraction in the amount of $200.00. The Cigarette Dealer License holder at each establishment also faces additional administrative sanctions from the Department of Revenue Services the state agency that issues Cigarette Dealer Licenses.

 

The establishments found to be in violation are as follows:
Boston Ave. Mart: 265 Boston Ave.
Future Market: 2336 Barnum Ave.
Lordship Shell: 145 Lordship Blvd.
Success Ave. Citgo: 605 Success Ave.
EZ Mart: 3355 Main St.

It should also be noted that the following businesses were found in compliance with the law:

Noticias de Stratford: Control de Tabaco cumplimiento

El 1 de mayo de 2019, el Departamento de policía de Stratford y los miembros del personal del estado de Connecticut, Departamento de servicios de salud mental y adicción (DMHAS), programa de prevención y observancia del tabaco (TPEP), realizaron inspecciones de cumplimiento no anunciadas de establecimientos que venden productos de tabaco. Las inspecciones se realizaron en un esfuerzo por determinar el cumplimiento de las leyes estatales relativas a la prohibición de la venta de cigarrillos y/o productos de tabaco a los jóvenes menores de dieciocho años.

Los empleados infractores en estos establecimientos fueron emitidos y la infracción por el monto de $200,00. El titular de la licencia de concesionario de cigarrillos en cada establecimiento también enfrenta sanciones administrativas adicionales del Departamento de servicios de ingresos de la agencia estatal que emite licencias de concesionario de cigarrillos.

Each non- perishable, non-expired food item is worth $1 of fines. Non- perishable food will be collected for the South End Community Center food pantry. Food items must not be damaged, open or expired. Non-perishable items currently needed are: pasta, cold and hot cereals, spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, peanut butter and jelly, canned vegetables, soups (dry and condensed) and rice. The Food for Fines program, which does not include materials that have been sent to a collection agency, will be in effect until Friday, May 31, 2019.

#Stratford CT–On 05-14-2019 at approximately 2:45pm a Stratford Police Officer saw a dog attacking a child on Everett Street. The Officer stopped and attempted to render assistance. The dog would not release the child and the Officer used his TASER on the animal in an attempt to stop the attack. The dog released the child who then ran to safety. The dog turned its attack on the Officer who used the TASER a second time to no effect. The Officer retreated and was ultimately forced to shoot the dog to stop the attack. The child was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident. The dog died from injuries at the scene. This is an ongoing investigation and there is no further information at this time.

Stratford CT-on 05-14-2019 aproximadamente a las 2:45pm un oficial de policía de Stratford vio a un perro atacando a un niño en Everett Street. El oficial se detuvo e intentó prestar asistencia. El perro no soltaba al niño y el oficial usó su TASER en un intento de detener el ataque. El perro liberó al niño que luego se fue corriendo. El perro volvió su ataque contra el oficial que usó el TASER por segunda vez sin efecto. El oficial se retiró y finalmente fue forzado a dispararle al perro para detener el ataque. El niño fue transportado a un hospital local para el tratamiento de las lesiones sufridas durante el incidente. El perro murió de lesiones en la escena. #Stratford CT–The Stratford Police Department is investigating a reported armed home invasion that occurred on Light Street. The incident was reported at approximately 0415am at which time it appears that three men entered the home and demanded money from the residents. The suspects fled after one of the residents grabbed a knife held by one of the invaders. The victim’s hand was cut when he grabbed the blade. The injury is non life threatening. It appears that the incident specifically targeted these residents and home and was not a random act.

#Stratford CT–Travis Walton age 24 was arrested following a narcotics search warrant execution at 15Woodend Road (Apt1). Walton is a fugitive who has avoided sentencing for approximately 3 years for weapons and domestic violence offenses. The warrant was served by members of the Stratford Police Department’s Narcotics Unit along with Patroland Detectives. Marijuana, packaging materials and money were also seized.Walton was taken into custody due to (5) outstanding warrants with a total of $400,000cash bond. Walton was unable to post bond and was placed in the lockup and issued a Court date of 05/07/2019.
