Ansonia News: Correction from the Ansonia Police

There have been incorrect postings on social media and the internet regarding an investigation into the possession of a weapon in Ansonia. The incident did not occur at the Ansonia Middle School or any other school in Ansonia, it happened the previous night, Wednesday September 4, 2024, but was not reported until yesterday, September 5, 2024, at about 1:20 P.M.. The incident was reported to the Ansonia Police Department by the Ansonia Middle School Administration immediately after they were advised of the incident by a student. At no point during the investigation was there any verified threat made regarding a shooting at any of our schools nor was there any verified threat to shoot any person. Based on the investigation it appears that rumor and innuendo were taken as fact then posted on social media. While social media is a tremendous tool to share information across a wide audience, incidents like this highlight the danger of unverified, incorrect, secondhand information being posted online. This in no way should discourage someone from reporting any incidents of threats or violence to the police department, we just ask that you use caution when making social media posts regarding these incidents especially when the investigation is active and ongoing. The Ansonia Police Department in conjunction with the Ansonia Public Schools and Superintendent Dr. Joseph DiBacco would like to reiterate our commitment to the safety and security of our schools; their students, faculty and employees, and all citizens of the City of Ansonia.

Bridgeport News: Donuts attract cops, leads to drug and firearm arrest

On September 1, 2024, at approximately 5:44 a.m., officers responded to an alarm call at Boca Oyster Bar, located at 10 East Main St. The alarm was determined to be false. As the officers were preparing to leave the scene, they noticed a Dodge Charger in the Bass Pro parking lot across the street performing “donuts” and spinning its tires, leaving fresh circular skid marks on the pavement.

The driver of the Dodge Charger was later identified as Luis G. Hartwell. After completing the reckless driving maneuvers, Hartwell parked his vehicle next to another car, which was occupied by a male spectator. Officers approached Hartwell as he exited his vehicle. As he attempted to return to his car and opened the driver’s side door, officers quickly detained him. While requesting Hartwell’s vehicle paperwork, one of the officers noticed a clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance in his fanny pack, which later tested positive for cocaine during booking.

On further investigation, Hartwell was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. In addition to reckless driving, officers discovered that his vehicle had neither valid registration nor insurance. During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered a loaded Ruger Security 9mm handgun with a light and laser attachment near the driver’s seat. Hartwell, who is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition, was also charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, and the illegal transfer or purchase of a pistol or revolver.

Hartwell’s bond was set at $100,000.

The vigilant work of the patrol officers on the A shift led to the discovery of the reckless operation of the vehicle, as well as the seizure of another illegal firearm from the streets of Bridgeport. The arresting officer’s training and experience enabled the quick identification of narcotics, which further led to the recovery of the firearm.
