own and Board of Education Accepts Equity Distribution

Westport, CT – On August 7, First Selectman Jim Marpe accepted a check in the amount of $85,404 to the Town and Board of Education for its prorated share of a $5.0 million Equity Distribution from the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency (CIRMA).  The Equity Distribution is a result of the continued efforts by the Town and BOE in managing risk through training and injury avoidance under the Worker’s Compensation program along with actions to reduce claims under its Liability, Auto and Property coverage. The Town and Board of Education have received $525,175 since the program was started in 2011. Westport News: Credit Card Misue and Larceny Charges

On Wednesday March 6, 2019, Westport Police began an investigation into Jaiman Shah based on a complaint made by his former employer that he had used American Express points from a company credit card to make over $16,500.00 in personal purchases. That investigation resulted in an arrest warrant being drafted and granted for Shah in which he was charged with Larceny 2 nd Degree, Credit Card Theft and Receipt of Goods by the Illegal Use of a Credit Card. For those charges, Shah had been previously arrested by this department on June 17, 2019 and at that time had posted a court set $50,000.00 bond.   While investigating this original complaint, the investigating officer was again contacted by the victim…

Westport News: Here Is That Pursuit I Reported On Yesterday

(Westport, CT) On Monday August 5, 2019 at approximately 4:41pm, Westport Police dispatch received a call from Ulta Beauty located at 1365 Post Road East reporting a possible shoplifting incident in progress. The caller reported that she had observed two individuals (a male and a female) known to her from previous shoplifting incidents enter the store. Staff began to monitor the two, both of whom began moving around the store and filling up bags with merchandise; consisting of various bottles of perfume. Staff attempted to speak with both of these individuals, at which time both exited the store without paying for the merchandise that they had selected. Westport News: Shoplifters Arrested After Pursuit

UPDATE: three total in custody in connection with that incident; two females and one male including at least one juvenile among those three.  Officers are still in the process of identifying them as of this writing, and I am told they aren’t being entirely forthcoming with that information. The total theft of cosmetics was just under $5,000.00, at $4700.00. Westport News: Sewage Leak Update

#Fairfield Beaches are closed. #Westport CT-- First Selectman Jim Marpe and Public Works Director Peter Ratkiewich announced as of 8:30 PM Saturday night, the sewage leak in the Saugatuck River was completely stopped and temporary pumps are in place to utilize the newly installed pipe. The temporary set up will be in place until the permanent pumps are installed next month. The Town has been in close communication with the Connecticut DEEP and the Weston- Westport Health District. Water quality testing will be performed on Monday in effort to re-open the beaches. Westport News: Sewage Spill

At approximately 1:30pm today, the Westport Fire Department Marine Unit was preparing for training on the river. Fire department personnel were notified by a person in the area of a reported sewage leak in the Saugatuck River. This leak was in the area of the I95 overpass. Engine 4 responded to the area and found what appeared to be sewage flowing up from under the river to the surface. The Public Works Department was immediately notified and a representative responded.   This also set into motion other activities aimed at minimizing the impact of the spill and erring on the side of caution. On Monday July 8, 2019 at approximately 4:28pm officers were dispatched to the area of Saugatuck Avenue near Interstate 95 for a report of a robbery that had occurred in the vicinity. The victim reported that he had been robbed of $165.00 by one of two occupants of a vehicle that had since left the scene. The victim relayed to officers that he had planned to meet with an acquaintance in the town of Westport. He reported that he had conversed with this acquaintance through a social media application and had arranged to purchase a cell phone in exchange for an older model cell phone and $165.00 in cash. Floating Wheelchairs Donated To Local Beaches

On Tuesday, August 6, 2019, SMILE Mass (Small Miracles in Life Exist) will donate floating beach wheelchairs to the towns of Fairfield, Norwalk and Westport, CT at a ceremony taking place at 12 noon at Westport’s Compo Beach Pavilion, 60 Compo Beach Rd., Westport, CT 06880. The public is invited to attend. SMILE Mass has donated over 130 of the floating beach wheelchairs throughout New England.  This will be the first donation to Connecticut. The floatable wheelchairs, which resemble beach recliners, have shock-absorbing wheels that maneuver easily over sandy terrain. Troopers Arrest Bridgeport Man on Weapon Charges

On Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at approximately 2:30 a.m., Troopers out of Troop G-Bridgeport came upon a disabled motor vehicle in the median of Interstate 95 Southbound, Exit 18, in the Town of Westport. Troopers quickly discovered that the Connecticut registration plate displayed on the rear of the vehicle came back to an entirely different make and model. The vehicle was occupied by two males who stated that they had ran out of gas. The operator of the vehicle, who was later identified as Leonard McNair (D.O.B: 01-22-1997), provided Troopers with an identification card which belonged to another person. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that McNair was in possession of a 9mm Handgun. McNair was subsequently arrested…
