Fairfield News: New Fish Market In Town

NordicFish Market located at 1499 Post Road, Fairfield, CT held their ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday with First Selectman Michael Tetreau along with  Chamber of Commerce officials.

Founder and owners Frank Lanzo and Jardar Nygaard are lifelong anglers with apassion for fish and seafood. Both have logged extensive sea time on commercial fishing boats and have been in the seafood industry their entire lives.  “With more than 50 years of experience in the seafood industry, we both know this business very well, every granular aspect. We have discussed this idea for a few years, but we both needed to be well positioned to commit 100%. Our circumstances allowed us to start looking late last year and here we are. We can compete as an independent because we are the best at this, hands-down. Our combined experience and background equals great quality and the knowledge to back it up.”  “Because our fish is fresh, fresh, fresh … we ensure only the freshest and healthiest products are presented in our store. We have the most knowledge, hands-on experience and desire to provide only the best. In addition, customers will find a unique sushi
section, offering a variety of delicious, hand-made items. While seafood is an expensive commodity, it is our desire to remain as competitive as possible and always provide the best experience for our customers.”

Beer Purchases At Walmart/Target?

Hartford, Connecticut (March 20, 2019)— Today, the Connecticut Alcohol Retailers Exchange (CARE), announced they’ve launched a new intro video, and a campaign encouraging residents to support retailers selling beer at locations statewide and other pro-consumer initiatives.

Nearly forty states currently allow retailers with significant grocery offerings — like Target and Wal-Mart — to sell beer. Now more than ever, especially as Connecticut seeks to become more competitive economically with its neighboring states like Massachusetts and New York, state law should allow for retailers with significant grocery offerings to sell beer.

“In Connecticut, we need to adapt with changing times, and that means modernizing our state’s alcohol laws,” said Josh Hughes, founder and executive director of CARE. “Our package store and retail members want to repeal the minimum price package stores can sell wine and spirits, allow package stores to be able to grow and own more permits, allow package stores to be able to sell to markets outside of the state, and if you’re functioning as a grocery store — like Target and Wal-Mart — you should be able to buy beer there.”

Two Roads Brewery Opens New Facility

Seven years ago, Two Road Brewery opened in Stratford. Since that time they have grown to be the 54th largest brand out of 8,000 independent breweries and in the top twenty-five in the USA with 145 employees. Over the years the company has made Two Roads Brewery at 1700 Stratford Avenue a destination, a “beercation” as they called it, with over 150,000 visitors each year not including their Road Jam Concert and Octoberfest where they typically will have over 3,000 people a day. Thursday, Two Roads Brewery, along with Mayor Laura Hoydick and other town and state dignitaries cut the ribbon on “Area Two” a $15 million facility located 100 yards from their main brewery. At Area Two they will be making a rare and unique barrel aged beers. Some of the beers will be aged for two years or more, while other beers will be using wild yeast which they will acquire from the wetlands located on their new grounds. They have been making these unique blends for some time but they did not have the capacity to make them commercially available. Brewmaster and co-founder of Two Roads Phil Markowski will continue working his magic on award-winning beer. He was kind enough to give me a personal tour which I hope to have edited for this weekend.

Too Roads Brewery abre nuevo local

Swanson’s Fish To Close, Then Founder Passes Away

#Fairfield CT– On December 20th Larissa Swanson, daughter of Gary and Sue Swanson who own Swanson Fish Market posted on her Facebook page : “So it’s finally official today, after 45 Year’s my father has decided to move on to another business venture and sell Swanson’s Fish Market. This will officially be our last Holiday. We have been a landmark here in Fairfield County, being voted best seafood for over 30 straight years, so it is a very bittersweet feeling for our family. Swanson’s doors will be officially shut after New Year’s Day, so come down for the holiday and get what you can while it lasts! Thank you all to our loyal customers, we love you”.

Today, Larissa posted that her grandfather, Gerry who founded the company passed away.  At one time there were five locations located in Fairfield, Bridgeport, Monroe, Hamden, and Orange.  After a series of closures, only the Fairfield location at 2439 Black Rock Turnpike remained.  But on July 4, 2012, the Fairfield locations was destroyed.  The store was rebuilt.  In 2014 Gary and Sue Swanson turned to the TV show The Profit to help save and expand the business.  The episode remains controversial to this day.  A highlight of the show can be seen here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJEUChmDsCE.

A deli is slated to take its place but I have not received confirmation of who the new owners will be.
